EDC 2012

Call for Proposals

Submission Deadline: Monday, November 28, 2011

Professional learning in any field is characterized by a synergy among, our individual and collective capacities to learn. Few communities of practice understand the value of professional learning more than the Educational Developers Caucus. Across the EDC community, our culture and practice has at least three dimensions:

  • Learning from our own practice
  • Learning from and in scholarship in our field
  • Sharing what we learn as a community of practice and scholarship with members and with those who aspire to join us

Dalhousie and Saint Mary's Universities warmly invite EDC colleagues and those who share an interest in our work to join us for the 2012 Conference in Halifax on February 22-24, 2012. Please visit our conference website at learningandteaching.dal.ca/EDC_2012/index.html for more information about the conference.

At the 2011 Conference in Sault Ste Marie, participants helped shape the themes suggested for 2012. Their suggestions are provided below to illustrate the richness and diversity within these themes and to help us generate a broad spectrum of proposals.

Developing the Developers

  • Building skills and competencies across our community, including strategic planning, financial management, change management, and project management
  • Developing mentoring strategies within the EDC
  • Designing (and marketing) educational development resources for diverse academic roles, across levels of experience, in on-line and face-to-face environments, and for various types of institutions
  • Exploring the role of educational development in curriculum mapping and program assessment
  • Planning for the retention and career advancement of educational developers

Educational Development Leadership

  • Adapting to the (changing) political and management contexts for educational development practice
  • Working effectively with senior administrators
  • Leading new centres, small centres, or centres serving multiple campuses
  • Working with institutional Development Offices to enhance funding opportunities
  • Forming productive partnerships across universities and regions/with other provincial and national bodies

Assessing our own Practice

  • Designing approaches to evaluating educational development impact
  • Mentoring and collaborating on educational development research
  • Finding research collaborators
  • Sharing successful and unsuccessful models for external reviews of Centres

TYPES OF PRESENTATIONS

The EDC Conference will feature four main presentation formats:

  1. 50-minute Presentations may include the following (but are limited only by your imagination):
  2. Interactive Presentations will highlight effective practices or research that informs our practice. Participants in these sessions will expect opportunities for active learning and/or interaction.

Panel Discussions will provide an opportunity to present different points of view on one or more conference themes. Each panelist will have time for a short presentation followed by a question and answer period. To allow 15-20 minutes for discussion with the audience, panels should be comprised of no more than 4 members. Proposals will include the names of panel members and an outline of the discussion plan.

Roundtables are more informal, open-ended discussions related to at least one theme of the conference. Roundtable hosts will provide a framework or scenario for discussion and facilitate a group of colleagues in a conversation to explore or resolve that topic.

Project Planning Sessions will provide an opportunity for you to discuss ideas, get input on, or recruit colleagues to join you on projects relating to educational development practice and/or scholarship. Participants in these sessions will expect to be highly engaged in helping you to optimize a plan for your project.

  1. Poster Presentations
  2. Poster presentations are an opportunity to visually portray and share beneficial practices or research findings relevant to the conference themes. Posters should be self-explanatory, but presenters will be available during the poster session to engage interested colleagues in discussion. The poster session will be held during a casual “eat and meet” lunch in the Rowe Building atrium on Friday.

  1. Conference Workshops (80 min.)
  2. Workshops aim to provide a forum for the collaborative development and discussion of ideas. They may be designed to critically examine educational development practices or to explore how to demonstrate the impact of our work. Workshop proposals should clearly indicate how participants will actively contribute to the session.

  1. Pre-conference Workshops
  2. Pre-conference workshops focus on topics that require in-depth development and extended discussion. Two half-day or one full-day pre-conference workshops will be scheduled on Wednesday, February 22, to run concurrently with the Educational Developers' Institute. Pre-conference workshop proposals should clearly indicate how participants will be actively engaged throughout the session.
