The Dalhousie University Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) Program is designed to provide information on students' perceptions of the teaching effectiveness of their instructors. The data is intended for summative and formative purposes. The summative section of the questionnaire (Section A) focuses on those common elements of teaching behavior that are associated with student achievement across diverse teaching contexts. These results are most appropriate for making judgments about general teaching quality and consistency of performance.
In addition, the Dalhousie SRI questionnaire contains separate sections that allow academic units or individual faculty members to obtain confidential formative feedback for their own use. Section B can include optional customized questions developed by an academic unit for purposes of program improvement. Section C can include optional questions developed by the instructor for purposes of receiving formative feedback, with results provided only to the instructor. Please see How to use SRI forms to get "made to order" feedback from students.
Finally, Section D is presented as a separate form that invites students to respond in writing to several open-ended questions. Only data from signed responses may be used for promotion and tenure purposes. Unsigned comments are received by the instructor only.
Copies of both SRI forms may be viewed at: http://learningandteaching.dal.ca/sri_forms.html
The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) coordinates the SRI Program, providing questionnaires, data processing, and report production and distribution. Support staff in each teaching unit assist by acting as liaisons and by coordinating the distribution and collection of questionnaires.
The information collected from the students is confidential, and access to both the raw data is strictly controlled and access to final reports is provided only according the University policy. Please see the procedures for data collection and reporting of results.
