Educational Leadership Award

Prior to 2002 known as the Dalhousie University Instructional Leadership Award

This award is presented annually to recognize the work of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the enhancement of university teaching.

Criteria

The Selection Committee will look for evidence of:
  1. a commitment to improving university teaching (primarily at Dalhousie, and possibly beyond the institution);
  2. leadership in creating an institutional environment which supports, encourages, and rewards teaching excellence.

Eligibility

The award is open to all Dalhousie University faculty members. (Please note that those eligible include, but are not limited to, recipients of awards for excellence in teaching. Department chairs and heads are also eligible.)

Nomination Procedures

Written applications should include:
  1. Documentation package should be submitted by Monday, February 6, 2012 to:
    Selection Committee
    Dalhousie University Educational Leadership Award
    Centre for Learning and Teaching
    Killam Library, Room G90

  2. Documentation package should include the following:
    1. a completed nomination form;
    2. up to three (3) letters of nomination outlining the basis of nomination;
    3. a brief (maximum four page) curriculum vitae or teaching dossier emphasizing the nominee's contributions to the enhancement of teaching;
    4. a one or two page statement from the nominee about his/her approach to teaching improvement;
    5. documentary evidence relevant to the nominee's work in improving teaching at the departmental, school, faculty and/or institutional levels, e.g., policy statements, reports, curriculum materials, programme or workshop descriptions and/or evaluations, research reports and publications on university teaching, etc.;
    6. copy of a citation for any other relevant award received by the candidate; and
    7. any other information that will assist the Selection Committee in its deliberations.

Please note: the winner of the Dalhousie Educational Leadership Award will, when appropriate, be nominated for related regional and/or national awards, many of which have strict restrictions on application file length and content. Applicants to this award are therefore strongly encouraged to follow the above criteria and to limit the application file to no more than 20 pages. (Excluding appended documentary evidence).

A complete copy of the nomination package, including all supporting documents and letters of recommendation, will be presented to the nominee following the selection process, unless otherwise directed by the nominee or nominators.

Selection Committee

The Senate Committee on Learning and Teaching will function as the Selection Committee.

Award and Recognition

The winner will receive a framed print with his or her name and the name of the award. Publicity will include coverage in the Dalhousie News. The winner will automatically be put forward as a nominee for the regional AAU Instructional Leadership Award.

Award Presentation

The award is presented at a luncheon.
